Types of Pet Bowls

March 30, 2017 Celine Lee

For many people, a pet bowl is just a pet bowl. But is it really?

Different pet bowls have different features, some better than others. In this article, we will be discussing the pros and cons of three common types of pet bowls in the market.

Plastic Bowls
Plastic pet food bowls are probably the most common out of the three types. They come in a huge variety of designs, colours, and sizes. They are also usually the least expensive, and unlikely to break if dropped.

However, plastic bowls are prone to scratches, which makes them a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. If your dog chews or scratches its plastic bowl often, it is best to replace it regularly! For cats, they might develop feline acne.

Ceramic Bowls
For design-conscious pet owners, many may prefer ceramic pet food bowls. Most ceramic bowls in the market are beautifully designed, some even handmade by designers. It is also more sturdy, compared to light plastic bowls. Since ceramic pet food bowls are often coated with glaze, it is less likely to trap bacteria.

The downside, however, is that ceramic bowls may break or chip if not handled properly. It is best to replace the bowl if chipped, as small cracks can harbour bacteria as well.

Stainless Steel Bowls
Stainless steel pet food bowls are by far the most durable in the market. These bowls often come with non-slip rubber base that prevents it from slipping away while your pet munches on food. Some pet owners may find stainless steel pet food bowls dull and boring, but there are actually a lot of new designs now that uses stainless steel bowls!

Your pets' food/water bowl is the one of the things your pets use most regularly. We should find a type that best suits them.
